Methanation is a Power-to-Gas technology for producing non-fossil, renewable natural gas (methane, CH4) from CO2 and hydrogen. CO2 comes from processing biogenic waste material, a very common source is biogas. Hydrogen is generated from renewable electricity via electrolysis.
The produced gas is virtually identical to the natural gas we know. It can be used directly in existing pipelines, gas-fired heating, gas vehicles and other infrastructure. In this way, renewable gas from CO2 methanation is a readily available key technology to sector coupling.
